Eryngium self sown in my garden. Covered in herbaceous geranium petals

Garden Tips from Alison Petrie

Plants are like us. They have 4 basic needs:-

Hebe given to my by my friend Caroline Trotter from Fife and self seeded astrantia

Food

Good soil is a blessing, but hard to find.  I am very keen on using good quality farmyard manure to enrich the soil.

At home I use well rotted stuff off the farm.  In my "Gardens", I use sterilised stuff, so that we do not bring unwanted weeds into the garden.

This bed has not been fed for 2 - 3 years but you can see how prolific it is now.

Water

At home, I garden on a glacial moraine so I have a very free draining garden.

I have made one bed retain water by putting a pond liner with holes pierced in in under the soil.  Last year it was a great success, this year it is wet, but the plants seem quite happy.

In my "Gardens", we try not to water as I only visit once a week or fortnight.  Plants will adapt and cope.

Light

Full sun, semi shade, shade are all to be considered when placing a plant.

If something does not look happy, pick it up and move it. There are no fast and sharp rules. Eventually you will find somewhere that suits the plant. It may be the rubbish heap.

If in doubt get a book and look it up.

Love
Talk to your plants as you tie them up with your plantclips. Wander round with your secateurs and a basket deadheading roses.

There are several things they do not need:-

Rabbits, invasive weeds, careless strimming (causes more damage than anything else) are just a few.

Blue Foxgloves great for gardening photography and horseriding

Plant supports, garden ties, garden tools for pruning, weeding and planting.
